Announcements: Just a reminder that we need old CD's and DVD's. I need just a few more and then we will have enough for the class. We have music therapy students for our 4-5 year old class this semester. They are so much fun. Here is a little about both of them: My name is Jazmine. I am a Music Therapy major with a minor in psychology. I am the oldest of four kids, with two younger brothers and the most adorable younger sister. I love the outdoors (can I say I am ready for summer?), cooking, reading, and teaching swimming. I served a full-time LDS mission in Hungary and loved my time spent there.I'm Maddy Kimball, and I'm from Lubbock, Texas. I came up to Utah State for the music therapy program, which I fell in love with and realized it was perfect for me after hearing about it through a "What Career Is Best for You?" test i found online. True story.
Anyways, music has always been a pretty big part of my life. I started piano lessons when I was 7 and learned flute and guitar later on when I was older. I'm the oldest of 5 kids--I have 3 younger brothers and a little sister. Some things I love to do (aside from playing music) are read, sleep, eat, paint with watercolors, do ZUMBA, and watch nerdy movies.

Home Challenge: Have you tried having your 4-5 year old child read to you some simple books yet? Let them sound the words out and I think you will be surprised how well they can read. I recommend the “Red Books” at the Library. The series of books is called “Reading for All Learners” It starts with “I see Sam” and they approach reading in a simple step by step method. http://www.iseesam.com/ For the 3-4 year olds be sure you are taking time everyday to read 20 minutes a day. The more you read to them the more they will be interested in reading. Reading is key to school success so keep doing it! If you child isn’t sounding out words yet I would recommend you just continue reading to them and having them point out letters to you or you asking them to find a word that begins with the letter… P for example.
Announcements: No School on Monday!
We need some Old CD’s or Videos. They can be scratched, broken. We need two for every student so if you could ask around and see what you can find that would be great! The craft for this is next week.
This week in our 4-5 year old class we had two music therapy students visit our class room. They are starting to help with our music time on Thursdays. I am going to send you more information about each student via e-mail soon. They are super excited to work with your children and it's a great opportunity to learn new skills and songs from them!

Home challenge: The weekend is a great time to play games as a family. Games teach so many valuable skills such as, learning to take turns, numbers, letters, colors, and more. I challenge you to find time to play a game with your preschooler. If you don’t have any games appropriate for this age you can buy some really nice games at Red Balloon Toy store. You can also make a homemade game, get some ideas from this link: http://www.pinterest.com/pamdyson/make-your-own-board-game/
Announcements: We are going to have music therapy students from Utah State come once a week again. This time they will be coming to the 4-5 year old class. I will have them write a little biography for you and send it so you can know a little more about them once they begin. We will begin learning phone numbers this week. If I haven’t heard from you I will just choose one of the numbers I have on file.

Homework: For those of you who have students who will be starting Kindergarten this year it’s time to be getting ready for registration. Have you considered visiting your local public elementary and finding out when registration is, what requirements there are to register. Are you up to date on your child’s vaccinations? These are things to think about now. When I was going to register my first child into school, I knew there was a charter school not too far from my house and decided I would just visit it to see what it was all about and then compare it to the public school. I had no intention of sending my son there but after visiting both schools, my husband and I agreed this was the school that would be best for our family. I am so grateful that I took the time to do this. In this valley there are a lot of options for elementary school so check them out. We really have an advantage when there is more then one choice. Here is the schools that I know about. There may be more I don’t know so start asking around and choose the school that you know will help your child succeed and one you feel good about.
Public school kindergarten is usually in March. I couldn’t find any specifics online so you may want to start with the school to get more information. http://www.ccsdut.org/index.cfm
Thomas Edison Charter School-There is one in Nibley and one in North Logan. Kindergarten is selected by lottery and they hold their lottery January 20th. They require you to visit the school and observe two classrooms so you have an idea of the teaching philosophy. They also have you view a short video before you can register. The school is public so there is no tuition fee. We have loved our experience at this school. http://www.thomased.org/
Edith Bowen Lab School is up on USU campus. This is also a public charter school with no tuition. This school has many hands on learning experiences. For information on admission visit: http://edithbowen.usu.edu/htm/admissions
Bear River Charter School: located at 75 S 400 W. This school is small and has small class sizes. They only take 20 students per grade. The school teaches K-8th grade. Enrollment is done by lottery and that takes place Feb. 11 2012 so you may want to check into this soon if you are interested. http://www.brcs-logan.org/
For those students who still have another year before Kindergarten it is also time to think about preschool registration:
I will be starting preschool registration for the 2014-2015 school year on February 1st. I wanted to give my preschool families first picks. So here is the scoop. I will be teaching two 4-5 year old classes next year on Tuesday and Thursday. One class will be 9-11 am and the afternoon class will be from 12:30-2:30. I will be giving any returning students a discount of $5 a month so it would be $55 a month. . If you are interested in keeping your child at Music Train please print off a registration form from the blog and turn that in with the registration fee so I can hold a slot open for you. I will also have some registration forms printed off in my front entry way. If you do not need another t-shirt you only need to pay $25. Otherwise the registration fee is $35. I will teach one 3-4 year old class on Friday Mornings from 9-11 am. This will be just a once a week class. I will also continue to teach the music classes at the Smithfield Recreation Center for children ages 0-5 and their parents. I’m looking to hold these classes on Wednesday mornings.
Calendar: This week is Show and Tell. We have Show and Tell on Wednesday or Thursday. Since we just had a holiday I thought it would be fun for each student to share either something they got for Christmas they are excited about or tell us about something they did they really enjoyed.
Home Project: I would like to work on phone numbers with the students starting next week. Could you please send me what phone number you would like your child to know to best get a hold of you. This is important information to know especially before Kindergarten.
This will also emphasis number recognition as well. Practice dialing your phone number
on a “fake” phone at home. If they are having a hard time remembering the number I
recommend putting it to music. It fits well with the “Bingo” song. “My phone number is
seven long and I can dial home, 512-6094, 512-6094, 512-6094 and I can dial home (or I can dial mommy).”
Letter M Number 14

We will be do our mid-year assessments during free time and revisit each student's Academic and Social Goal. I will be e-mailing you sometime during the break to let you know your child's results.

Craft on Monday and Tuesday will be Christmas Chains to Count Down to Christmas
Craft on Wednesday and Thursday will be decorating cookies for program

Announcements: Don't forget the program on Wed or Thur at 10:30 am.
We still are going outside for about 5-10 minutes. Because it is cold I am reducing the free play outside and increasing the free play at the beginning of the day so the children will have time to socialize and play with each other. I feel this is very important. I am having many of the children complain because they are cold outside. Even though they only go out for a small time please have them bring a coat everyday and pack them some mittens/gloves and a hat in their backpack that they can wear if needed. I want them to be comfortable while they play.

Home Challenge: This week Christmas is getting closer and often time it means more stress in the home. Do your best to keep stress at home to a minimum. If you keep your child well rested by going to bed on time and taking naps during the day, and consistent meals. This can take the stress off quite a bit and keep them healthy. Also it's important to take time to do a fun Christmas Project with your child like make gingerbread cookies, a gingerbread house, Go Christmas Caroling with your family. These memories will be treasured in your children’s mind forever.
We will highlight the kids and some of the songs they have been learning. It will be a treat to see them show off a bit. You are welcome to come and enjoy that. We will also have refreshments afterward.

Homework Challenge: This week we will be talking about the kitchen. There are so many math, science, and reading skills that are built by doing cooking activities. Please find time to include your child in some of your cooking/baking this holiday season. These memories of cooking with mom and dad are priceless! It takes some patience so do it when you both are well rested and have more time to dedicate to the project. Don’t be offended if they get tired after helping for a few minutes. Make sure they feel special for helping even for just a little bit. This will encourage them to help more and build up their self confidence especially if you tell others they helped you make it while they are listening!
It's already December! Tuition is due this week. I will send home a calendar with your child this week as well. Mark on your calendar December 18th or 19th at 10:30 we will have a Christmas program where the class will share some of their favorite songs with you. We also will have them serve you a christmas treat.

Home Challenge: For those of you who have children who will be entering kindergarten in the Fall of 2015 I highly recommend you register your child for the Upstart preschool? This would be for those that are 3 or 4 years old now. I had my two youngest children participate in the program and they loved it. I would recommend you do this in addition and not in replacement of preschool. You just can't replace the social aspects of preschool. Learning to sit up and listen to a teacher, playing and cooperating with other children their age, taking turns to talk and participate in a class room setting are only some of the social skills your children learn to prepare them for school. The upstart preschool is free and done completely all from your home computer. The children learn at their own pace and their is lots of music involved in the learning. Here is the information and I would sign up soon because spots are very limited!
UPSTART is now accepting applications for 2014. UPSTART has a 99.8% approval rating from parents and was recently awarded by Parents for Choice in Education. UPSTART uses Waterford’s early reading, math, and science curriculum, adapting the learning pace to the child’s ability for a personalized, effective, and rewarding experience. The native-language support team ensures that you and your child achieve success. UPSTART is easy to use and free, but spots are limited. Apply now! Homework challenge: With the Tuesday and Thursday we have been working in the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Engelmann. I love this method of teaching children to read. I highly recommend that all my parents buy this book and use it at home to reinforce the reading at home. We will begin using the book in the Monday and Wednesday Classes starting in January. I didn’t feel like they were quite ready to begin it yet but by Jan. I think they will be. Most of the kids are doing really well with the reading and are catching on fast. You can get the book at The Book Table or online. I know they have the book at most libraries so if you want to check it out first before you buy it that may be a good option.
I will be sending an e-mail with a survey to see if you have any suggestions or things you would like done at preschool. We have been going for a few months and I would like some feedback to know if I can make this a better experience for you and your student. You can return this via e-mail or print it out and return in person. Thank you!
Announcements: Flu and Cold Season is hitting. If your child is running a fever, has been throwing up within 24 hours of preschool, or has a green runny nose please keep them home so we don’t spread the sickness. My kids may get sick and if this happens I will provide a separate place for them to be during preschool and still have preschool. If I get the flu I will contact you and cancel preschool. (this won’t likely happen, but just in case)
Homework Challenge: I have been working with our students on correct pencil grip. This is a challenge for many of the students. If they are reinforced at home to hold their pencil, crayon, marker or whatever correctly then I know the habit will be made much faster. The middle finger and thumb form a vise for holding the pencil. The index, or pointing, finger rests between the middle finger and the thumb. Fingers need to be close to the point of the pencil. All knuckles, including the thumb, should be bent and the fingers and thumb rounded to the same degree. Here is a picture of a good pencil grip. Try to keep fingers relaxed so there is no strain on the hand or fingers.
Announcements: It is getting pretty cold so be sure to send jackets/coats with your kids for outside play. I am a firm believer that outside play is crucial at this age. I don’t have them play outside for long but it gives them time to get their wiggles out and have unstructured time play and create within their own space. Gloves and hats may also be appropriate to send in their backpacks if they want to bring them. It is a good idea to label the clothing so I can get it home to the right child. I’m sorry the weather didn’t cooperate for our field trip this week. I did hear from the children that many of you were able to go with your family so that is great. It’s a fun tradition in Cache Valley. I put some fun pictures of Halloween on facebook you might want to check out.

Home Challenge: We have learned quite a lot of letters. The 3-4 year olds are just being introduced to the letters and might not be able to identify them all but I would like them to be able to identify at least the first letter of their name by now. If this is still a challenge you may want to encourage this at home. For the 4-5 year olds, I don’t think it is too much to say they should be able to identify all the letters that we have worked on so far. Some can also identify the sound(s) they make. Here are the letters that we have learned so far you may want to see what letters they can identify at this point and work on the ones that they can’t do. (A,C,D,F,G,O,S,Q,B) Magnetic Letters, alphabet puzzles, alphabet computer games, stamping, stickers, reading books and identifying letters on the page are all ways that you can encourage and support their learning. Another fun way you can have a letter for a week is write the letter on a small paper and have your child carry it around with them everywhere they go. They have to babysit their letter. Throughout the day ask how their “A” is and where it is? Do this until that letter is solid.

Home Challenge: Routine is very important in a preschooler’s day. A routine will help your child feel safe and secure in his environment. But in setting a routine remember that it serves you and your child and it can change daily depending on your and your children's needs. I have a great book that helps prepare children emotionally, physically, and mentally for kindergarten. The book is called On Becoming Preschoolwise, By Gary Ezzo. In making a schedule for your day he suggests, “Taking a sheet of paper and dividing it into half-hour our hour increments. Start planning each day keeping in mind that the weekends are less structured than weekdays. (They give sample schedules in the back) Know that once you get your children’s schedules under control, you will easily find time to manage the rest of your day.” Some of the activities that are suggested for preschooler is room time and playtime activities including painting, drawing, coloring, puzzles, and more. There is also school time, sit alone time, rest time, reading time with mom, and even electronic play. When you have multiple children it can be hard to give each one individual time with mom and dad. He gives great suggestions on how to manage the time. Once children have a little more structure and individual time with mom and dad behavior improves because they know what is expected of them during the day. You can also have time to do what you need to get done as well. If you want to borrow this book let me know. You may also find it at the local library.
This week we will have child help design a part of the jack-o-lantern. We will only use markers and then I will do the cutting at a later time. The pumpkin walk has been a Cache Valley tradition since 1983. I’m excited to participate by designing and carving pumpkins that will be used along the walk ways. I am going to make a sign to put by our pumpkins that acknowledges each of our preschool children. I was planning on just using first names but if anyone is uncomfortable about that please let me know and I will leave your child’s name off the sign.

Homework Challenge: This week we are identifying the changes of the fall season. I challenge you to go on a walk or drive and ask your child to notice anything that shows what season we are in. Such as the leaves that are changing colors, leaves on the ground, frost, plants that are dying, apples on trees, even Halloween decorations can be a sign of Fall or Autumn.

It keeps great in a air tight container. I had a batch that lasted one year! Here is a link to the recipe.

One other challenge is to work on rhyming with your child at home. Taking one sound such as "s" as the starting sound and practice rhyming with ee, at, een, o. You can do the same with "m" to make different words. Other ways to practice rhyming is reading Dr. Seuss and nursery rhymes and other literature that rhymes.

They have been keeping me super busy so I can't think about the camera during class. =) I'm done with assessments and will be spending time typing out individual e-mail about goals for each child so look for that within the next week.
Homework Challenge:Homework Challenge: Now that we are starting to put on jackets, and shoes and socks I have found it is a lot harder to get my own kids out the door because of the time it takes to put everything on. Does your child know how to put their own coat on? Can they put their own shoes on? Your challenge this week is to take a little more time when it's time to go somewhere and have them put their own jacket and shoes on. If they can already do this it's time to start learning how to tie shoes. This can be frustrating so try to make it fun and do it when your not rushed. Here is a video I really liked about how to teach your kids http://youtu.be/eN9LcG_4B74 This is the wrap around way you can also teach them the bunny hole way but I personally have a hard time teaching this way because the ears get tangled for the kids.
Announcements--This week is our first field trip. We are going to a close park to do some fun active games. You are more then welcome to come and join the group to help out. We are going to have 3-4 year old group go on Monday. We have music therapy students that come on Wednesday for Music Time and so I’m going to switch the day we go to our field trip. I only use washable paints, if your child comes home with paint on their clothes I’m really sorry, if you put spray and wash on it should come out in the laundry. I will try to remember to warn you if we are painting on the calendar and on the weekly notes. 3-4 year olds will be painting on Wed. and 4-5 year olds will be painting on Tues.
Home Challenge-- The weather has been so beautiful, I challenge you to take your preschooler to the park and have each of you take a turn to make up an obstacle course on the playground you can take turns doing it and if they enjoy the competitive side, take a stop watch and time them to see if they can beat them self.
I am just wrapping up the student assessments and will be e-mailing each of you about it and what I would like to work on with them this semester. Please let me know if you have any concerns about your child or any questions. I feel like all the kids are doing really well and I'm enjoying each of them!
Announcements: Thank you for all those that brought your stickers. We are going to be using these all year round in our crafts and our reading chart.
Homework Challenge: This week we are working on our colors and shapes. I have been working on an assessment which gives me a baseline to what our preschoolers know right now. Most know there shapes and colors well. So this week is fun because they are already familiar with it. One shape that is difficult for preschoolers is the difference between squares and rectangles. So I challenge you to help your student find some squares and rectangles in your house. So they can see and feel the difference with you.
Tuition is due this week.

Homework Challenge: Each week I give parents a challenge to do at home with their child. This is so important to be involved with their schooling. If you do this your child will get more out of their preschool experience. I am teaching your child some sign language to use in the classroom. This is an effective way to communicate with me and it helps them not to speak out and disrupt the class. Ask your child if they remember how to say "yes", "no" Thank you, Time, Bathroom, Tissue Please, and Play. These are signs we will use often at school. If they can't remember you can ask me and I will teach you so you can use these at home as well. Signs can be used with children that are not speaking yet. So try teaching them to your infants and toddlers. I loved using these with my babies that are sitting in their high chair to eat.

This is our final week for the School Year! The kids have a fun program planned where they will showcase their favorite songs sung in Music Time. We will also show you some of our reading skills. I've made a slideshow of pictures I've taken throughout the year I will show as well. Hope you can make it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I encourage you to keep your child active and learning during the summer. I will send home their name templates and it would be a great idea for you to practice writing their name everyday and read to them 20 minutes a day. One thing I like to do in the summer is pick up a workbook from the dollar store and have my preschooler do a page a day.

For those of you interested in Summer classes it's not too late to register. I have between 4 and 2 openings in each class. Let me know if you want me to send home a registration form.
For Next year's 2013-2014 class I have 6 open spots for 3-4 year old and 3 open spots for the Pre-Kindergarten Class. If you have friends or families with preschoolers I would appreciate your recommendation. It has been a great year and I just adore your children. Thanks for the opportunity to teach them! Announcements: Thanks so much for all those that were able to come out to the parade. We had a lot of fun. I posted a picture on our facebook page if you want to check it out. Can you believe we only have two weeks left of preschool. The month is flying by and we are about ready for graduation. I will be doing final testing this week and next. I will just take one child at a time during free time to get them done. This final testing will help us see how much your child has retained throughout the year. This Wednesday and Thursday if our last field trip for the year. I will send a separate e-mail with our itinerary so watch for that. I do still need one parent to help drive. We only need a car that can hold two preschool children. If you would like to come but can't drive I can take one adult in my van. I can fit six children in my van. If you know you can’t come to preschool on Thursday please let me know so we know how many to plan for.

Home Challenge: Start thinking of summer now. Kindergarten will begin before you know it. To help prepare you child, schedule your day so you can fit in some Reading Time, and some type of project, whether it's, coloring, playing an alphabet or counting game, or making something together in the kitchen. Have them practice writing their name for you everyday. There are lots of story times and summer reading programs that can help motivate your child to read with you this summer. Another thing to think about is to keep them active by going to the park and playing outside. We like to take swimming lessons so they learn how to be safe in the water. I have summer registration forms if you would like to sign up for our summer preschool.
