Announcements: FYI: Our art projects this week will be saved here for our end of the year binder. We have been collecting these throughout the year it will be nice for them to have a memento to help them remember preschool and what they did. Thursday March 1st (this week) we will be having a short day. Preschool will go from 9:00- 10:30 am. I would like to get March Calendars out next week. Our computer with most of my preschool information is being fixed right now so if we can get it running I will hopefully have those out soon. Next week is Show and Tell. We will be talking about Families next week so I would like them to bring something that represents their family. It could be a favorite activity you do together, a picture of your family, or anything else that would represent their family.

Homework Challenge: I have noticed some of the children are struggling with identifying ABC’s so this week I thought it would be good for families to do something at home this week with letters. (Here is a few ideas) If you have suggestions of something you have done please share it by replying on the e-mail or posting a comment on the blog. Thanks!
1. One fun game you can do at home is to play the alphabet game while you are eating breakfast with the cereal boxes, or while you are reading a book. It’s hard to do this in the car because you can’t be sure your child actually saw it.
2. Get out your ABC puzzles, blocks, magnets, any toys that emphasis letters and play with your child and help identify letters with them
3. One fun game is the alphabet word game where you find a word in a magazine or newspaper starting with every letter in the alphabet. You could even cut it out and paste it on a paper. If you do this I would love to see it, have them bring it to school to show their class mates.

Announcements: Don't forget next week is Presidents day so no preschool on Monday and Tuesday. On March 1st it was the consensus of the group to have preschool on Thursday and get out early. So mark on your calendar March 1st time will be 9:00 - 10:30 am. (I'll remind you when it gets closer) Thanks for your understanding in the unexpected teacher meeting.

Home Challenge: The Tuesday and Thursday Class made letter for their grandmas and/or grandpas on Thursday. Check their backpack for a letter with a stamp already on that they chose. Please take the time to write their address on with your child and also help them write the return address with them. It might be fun to take a trip to the post office to mail the letter or put out in your own mailbox. For the Monday and Wednesday class since we were short on numbers and we ran out of time we didn't make letters so take the time this weekend or next week to draw a picture for a Grandparent and send it in the mail.

I just want to thank you for all being such wonderful parents! I am always so pleasantly surprised at the creativity and time you spend to prepare for show in tell, spotlights, and then just last week for valentines day. It really makes the kids excited and brings a fun element at preschool.

Announcements: We will be exchanging Valentines Monday and Tuesday. Monday group needs to bring for 6 children and Tuesday needs to bring for 8 children. We will make fun sacks to keep all the valentines in that day. We had many parents who were able to come and be with us and I really appreciate all your help. It was a great experience for the children to interact with the older adults and the adults just enjoyed the children so much. For those of you in the Tuesday Thursday class I need to make an adjustment for March 1st. I need some of your feedback to what you would prefer. I have to be at a teacher training meeting at 11:00 am. So I am wondering what would work better for your schedule, to do a short day on March 1st and go from 9:00-10:30am or come from 9:00-11:30 on Friday March 2nd. Please e-mail or reply to this post your preference and I'll let you know next week what is decided. Thanks!

Home Challenge: Start a Valentine Tradition this year or keep an old one to help Valentines be special at your house. You can heart attack your child’s room by putting hearts all over there door or help your child do it for an older sibling, grandparent, or dad. Have a special meal for valentines where the whole family is together, or simply get together to play a family game. Sometimes the simple traditions that you can easily keep are the best!

Announcements: February Tuition is Due Monday or Tuesday. Don’t forget to have your child where their preschool t-shirt on Wednesday or Thursday. If you buy a t-shirt this month I will be picking them up on Tuesday afternoon I will put their new t-shirt over the shirt they wear to school.

Homework: We are talking about people of different abilities and challenges this week. It would be great if your family could have a discussion about people you know or have seen in the community that have a disability. Emphasize that people with differing abilities can do many of the things everyone else can do, and we shouldn’t focus on their disability. They may already know someone in their neighborhood or family who has a challenge; encourage them to be friendly and kind to them. Hopefully by talking about this our children will not be afraid to be friends and play with other children who have a disability.

Dear Parents:

This week usually would be show and tell but we are waiting till next week. So plan on Monday and Tuesday having your child bring one thing that can grow or was grown. Be as creative as you would like. Examples: A seed, Fruit, veggie, flowers, plants, pet, etc.
Next week we are going on a field trip to Sunshine Terrace. I have arranged to do a combined music therapy group with the residents there led by Music Therapist, Jennifer Birchell. Wednesday group will meet as usual at 9:00 do our morning greeting and seat work and leave here at 9:30 am. We will be going to Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center in my van. The only change for Wednesday is we will be home at 11:00 am. So plan on picking up your children here at my house at 11:00 am. If any parents would like to come your welcome. Thursday group will be going to the Sunshine Terrace Nursing Center. We will do some preschool activities before and after the field trip so same drop off and pick up time apply. Thank you to David's mom for helping us by driving! Have your child wear their preschool t-shirt.
The t-shirts we made were fun but I didn't like how the iron on worked so I have had Badger print some shirts for next year and they should be ready for this field trip. If anyone has lost their shirt or would just like a new one this is what they look like and they cost $7.00. I have x-small and small and they look like this. If you do want one, you can simply add it to your February Tuition.

Valentines Day is coming up! We will be exchanging valentines on Monday the 13th or Tuesday the 14th. Monday's Group has 6 total children and Tuesday's group has 8 total children. Please just have your child or you write on his valentines From: __________ and his or her name. That will make it easy for them to exchange. If you would really like to have a list of the kids in our classes let me know and I will give you their first names in an e-mail. We will be decorating valentine sacks for them to keep their valentines in. It will be a fun day!

Announcements: Look around your house for unused CD’s or DVD’s next week we will make our craft with these. Thanks so much for your help in rounding up beautiful junk! I’ve started registration for next year and I have four children signed up for the 4-5 year old class. I have raised prices but for any returning students or for student’s siblings signing up they will get a family discount. My 3-4 year old class will now be 2 hours long instead of 1 1/2 hours. The discounted price for that class will be $45. The 4-5 year old class discount price will be the same as this year, $50. Let me know if you have any questions.

Homework Challenge: How many hours a day/week do your kids play video games or watch TV? In the winter this can be a challenge because you can’t send them outside as much. Try setting a reasonable limit that will work for your family. We bought a timer that sits on our TV and when the timer goes off we turn it off. Now what? Here is a few ideas: play board or card games, do a puzzle, make a Lego creation, Make a puppet show, Go to the library and pick out some new books, Go swimming at the Smithfield Rec. Center or other indoor pool, Make a car or house out of a large cardboard box. Not only will you create some fun memories but our children learn so much more doing engaging activities.

Announcements: No School Monday this week. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I have started getting calls and e-mails about next year's preschool. If your 3 or 4 year old child who is already enrolled in preschool now is interested in preschool for next year, you would not need to fill out new registration forms and pay the registration fee, (I only charge this to new students) just let me know what class would work for you. I am keeping the 3-4 year old classes on Monday and Wednesday and the 4-5 year old class on Tuesday and Thursday. But depending on registration numbers I may add a new class. If you know friends or family looking for a preschool, I would love your recommendation.

Home Project/Challenge: Bundle up and go outside this week. In the winter it’s hard to get outside and play so find an excuse to do something fun outside this week like: Make a snowman, make snow angels, Color snow with water bottles/spray bottles filled with colored water, Just jump around and stomp making footprints in the snow. You can make letters or pictures with your footprints. If they are covered up good and warm they will have a good experience and when they get cold it’s time to head in then they will want to do it again and again.

Homework: For those of you who have students who will be starting Kindergarten this year it’s time to be getting ready for registration. Have you considered visiting your local public elementary and finding out when registration is, and what requirements there are to register? Are you up to date on your child’s vaccinations? These are things to think about now. When I was going to register my first child into school, I knew there was a charter school not too far from my house and decided I would just visit it to see what it was all about and then compare it to the public school. I had no intention of sending my son there but after visiting both schools, my husband and I agreed this was the school that would be best for our family. I am so grateful that I took the time to do this. In this valley there are a lot of options for elementary school so check them out. We really have an advantage when there are more then one choice. Here is the schools that I know about. There may be more I don’t know so start asking around and choose the school that you know will help your child succeed and you feel good about.

Public school kindergarten is usually in March. I couldn’t find any specifics online so you may want to start with the school to get more information. http://www.ccsdut.org/index.cfm

Thomas Edison Charter School-There is one in Nibley and one in North Logan. Kindergarten is selected by lottery and they hold their lottery January 20^th. They require you to visit the school and observe two classrooms so you have an idea of the teaching philosophy. They also have you view a short video before you can register. Edith Bowen Lab School is up on USU campus. There are also a public charter school with no tuition. For information on admission visit: http://edithbowen.usu.edu/htm/admissions

Bear River Charter School: located at 75 S 400 W. This school is small and has small class sizes. They only take 20 students per grade. The school teaches K-8^th grade. Enrollment is done by lottery and that takes place Feb. 11 2012 so you may want to check into this soon if you are interested. http://www.brcs-logan.org/

Next week we are coloring snow on Wed or Thursday. So we can have one small spray bottle for every child --could you bring one bottle from home. They will be returned after class.
We are making a cool toy out of empty water bottles. We will need one per child so if you have any send them
Lastly-we will need CD's. Ones that don't work anymore or ones you get the mail you will throw out anyway, movies will work as well. Blank ones you won't use.

Home Project: I would like to work on phone numbers with the students this week.

Could you please send me what phone number you would like your child to know to best

get a hold of you. This is important information to know especially before Kindergarten.

This will also emphasis number recognition as well. Practice dialing your phone number

on a “fake” phone at home. If they are having a hard time remembering the phone number I

recommend putting it to music. It fits well with the “Bingo” song. “My phone number is

seven long and I can dial home, 512-6094, 512-6094, 512-6094 and I can dial home.” Or

you can sing and I can dial mommy or daddy.

Homework Challenge:
Christmas is such a fun time for children. The colors, smells, tastes, new textures, teach and give our children new experiences. The memories of these fun times will last for a long time. I challenge you to make and keep family traditions that will create family memories that will last throughout their life. One of our favorite traditions is making Gingerbread houses. The kids love to spend time designing and decorating their houses. We always take pictures of the houses with their builders and they love to look at them later. Another fun tradition is Christmas Caroling.
Next year we will start learning our phone number. What number do you what your child to know in case of an emergency? Your cell phone, work phone, or home phone. If you will send me the phone number you would like them to learn that will be the number we will work with. I think this is an important skill and it's great practice with numbers as well.

Next week I will do a mid year assessment to see how each child is progressing compared with their initial assessment. I will be making goals for each child that we will be starting on in Jan. When I get these done I will e-mail each of you the results of the tests and the goals I have for them. I will set a cognitive and a social goal for each of them. I would love your input if you have concerns or ideas of things you would like for me to notice and work on at school, please let me know.

Home Project: Playing is how children learn. We may think they are just “playing” but for a child this is their work. We need to give children the opportunities in their day for uninterrupted play. It’s good for children to have their own time to play and time that mom or dad joins in. It’s hard to give them our time everyday for play but I want to challenge you to find a few minutes everyday to join with them in their play. Don’t take over the play, let the child direct you. Give them the floor and let them tell you how to play. Have fun!

I have had a few students move so I'm looking for more preschool students to fill our classes. I'm hoping to get them filled so I don't have to combine our Monday and Wednesday classes to one class. Spread the word, I'm running a special price for new students. If they sign up before Dec 1st. They can get 1/2 off December tuition. December will be a really fun month. We are getting ready for our Christmas program and will be learning fun songs and even play a tone bell song. We have some fun projects planned!

Next week we are going on a Field Trip to Lee's Market. I will have Rachelle, our great teacher volunteer, drive so we don't need any mom's to come unless of course you would like to. Monday groups will meet together at my house at 9:30. You can pick up at preschool at 11:30. Tuesday will have the same time as usual. We will do some things before and after the field trip. Please bring and leave carseats/boosters and have your child wear their preschool t-shirt.

This week for the homework challenge I just wanted to give you encouragement for having your child in preschool by giving you the reason I think preschool is important.

Learning the ABC's and numbers can be done at home as well as art's and crafts. The most important thing I think preschool teaches children is learning social skills with children their own age and then learning the importance of respect and how to treat a teacher.

I also believe preschool teaches the child attention skills that are vital to learning. In our preschool we have short periods of time when everyone sits and listens to the teacher. I see each of the children getting better and better at focusing during instruction time. This routine of practicing focusing their attention is so important. It's hard to simulate the teacher/student classroom experience at home so I complement you for allowing your child the opportunity to experience this here at preschool.

Thank you for all those that have e-mailed me back the survey! I really appreciate the feedback so far it has been so helpful. Those of you who haven't done it--when you get a chance I would really appreciate it.

Homework challenge: With the Tuesday and Thursday we have been working in the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Engelmann. I love this method of teaching children to read. I highly recommend that all my parents buy this book and use it at home to reinforce the reading at home. We will begin using the book in the Monday and Wednesday Classes starting in January. I didn’t feel like they were quite ready to begin it yet but by Jan. I think they will be. Most of the kids are doing really well with the reading and are catching on fast. You can get the book at The Book Table or online. I know they have the book at most libraries so if you want to check it out first before you buy it that may be a good option.

Announcements: FYI: Some of things we create we will not bring them home because I am collecting a few things to put in a packet to give them at Preschool Graduation. This will be a fun thing to have as a memory of preschool and I will print off a few pictures to put in their as well.

Flu and Cold Season is hitting. If you child is running a fever, has been throwing up within 24 hours of preschool, or has a green runny nose please keep them home so we don’t spread the sickness. My kids may get sick and if this happens I will provide a separate place for them to be during preschool and still have preschool. If I get the flu I will contact you and cancel preschool. I haven’t had to do this before so lets hope I can stay healthy!

Homework Challenge: I have been working with our students on correct pencil grip. This is a challenge for many of the students. If they are reinforced at home to hold their pencil, crayon, marker or whatever correctly then I know the habit will be made much faster. The middle finger and thumb form a vise for holding the pencil. The index, or pointing, finger rests between the middle finger and the thumb. Fingers need to be close to the point of the pencil. All knuckles, including the thumb, should be bent and the fingers and thumb rounded to the same degree.

Monday is Halloween and your child is welcomed to come dressed up today for our Halloween Party!
November is here Tuesday I will send a new calendar home so watch for that and November monthly tuition is due this week.
Wed and Thursday is Show and Tell, please have your child bring a favorite stuff animal they love to hold and cuddle with. We are talking about all of our senses this week.
Check your child's backpack for the photo release form and please turn that in by the end of the week. I have taken a bunch of pictures from our pumpkin walk, so I'm hoping to go through them soon and send you each a few pictures on e-mail.

Homework Challenge: Because our senses are so important for us to learn, I would encourage you and your child to talk about your senses this week. Here is an example you could do at home. Did you know our tongue has 3,000 taste buds, have them look at their tongue to see all their taste buds. When we taste foods we taste things bitter, sweet, sour, or salty. You can make lemonade together and have them try the bitter lemon rind, the sour lemon fruit the sweet sugar and then the final finished lemonade deliciously sour/sweet. You can also take your child on a walk blindfolded and have them identify cars, leaves rustling, wind, and dogs barking just with their hearing sense.

Teacher Volunteer

I am really excited to have Rochelle Webb who will be volunteering her time to help in our classroom every Monday and Wednesday. She will be a great asset to our preschool and it will be nice to have an extra hand to help. She came with us to the pumpkin walk on Monday and I was so grateful for her help and I can see she is wonderful with children! Here is some information so you can get to know her a bit.

I was born in Ogden, Utah, graduated from Sky View High School. I started attending USU, when I met my husband, Scott Webb. We have been married for seven years, traveling around the world with the United States Marine Corps. I have changed my major a few times to say the least and found out that I have a spot in my heart to work with children and become a teacher. I started working on my education degree while we were stationed in Okinawa Japan for three years. Since my husband is deployed and I am staying with my parents for the duration of the deployment, school has been placed on hold. Once I move back to North Carolina, where we are currently stationed, I will start back up with my studies. Since I am only in Smithfield for a few months, four months left, I find myself wanting to get back into the classroom again. However, since my time here is brief, and I know how hard the hiring and training process is for a new school, I find that my best option is to volunteer at a preschool, to continue my teaching education. I have worked with children all of my life, from being a babysitter in my younger years, to working with CAPSA in Logan, to being a full time nanny for a wonderful family during my stay in Okinawa. We are lucky to have a college student, Rochelle Webb, who is going to be volunteering in our classroom to get some experience with preschool children. She will be coming on Monday with us to our field trip to help out and then she will start coming to help in the classroom as well. She will be a great addition to our preschool. I will have her introduce herself soon!

I will be sending a note home with each of your children about putting pictures we take at preschool on the blog. If you can read this, sign and send it back that would be great.

On Thursday of this week and Monday of next the children may come in Halloween costumes if they would like. This is optional. We are calling it our Halloween party but we really are doing basically the same structure as usual, just adding a Halloween Theme.

Homework Challenge:

Technology can be very helpful to teach concepts. I have found some websites that have some great games that the kids enjoy and also teach good skills. I wanted to share one with you. This website is designed for many ages. The youngest is for Kindergarten but I have my three year old working with it and it's fine for her. Check it out. http://www.abcya.com/

Also you can get great apps on your phone that are nice to have when you are waiting in line or for your food at a resturant. Here is one that has a teaching tool for numbers, letters, colors and shapes. It's called JANES ABCs. You can get it on most phones. It's only $.99 so it's way cheap and fun for the kids. This is a short day because I originally planned to take this day off of preschool because of UEA and my school kids are home for the day. But because of the pumpkin walk schedule we are adding this extra day so we won't have a fall break.

Monday Group
9:15--Meet at preschool and load in all the carseats--remember to where your preschool shirts!
9:30--Leave to go to the pumpkin walk
9:45--Arrive at Pumpkin walk
10:45--Leave Pumpkin walk to go home
11:00--Pickup up children at preschool

Pumpkin Walk Details: The pumpkin walk is at Elk Ridge Park: Address is 1100 E 2500 N in North Logan. If you are meeting us there please meet us at the large Pumpkin mural entrance that faces North. We will wait here. I will have my cell phone with me--435-512-4193. Call me if you have trouble finding us. We will meet here at the end as well so you can easily find us to take your child home.

Last minute Instructions: We want everyone in their preschool t-shirts so we can easily be identified and located if lost. Please let me know if you are planning on taking your own child to and from the pumpkin walk so I know not to wait for them at preschool and we have enough seats in the cars. Just a quick reply via e-mail would be great even if you have talked to me about it already. Talk to your children about staying with the group. I will also do this before we leave and put everyone in partners so we will stick together. If you can be sure to take your child to the bathroom before you bring them that would be helpful as well.

This week we will have child help design a part of the jack-o-lantern. We will only use markers and then I will do the cutting at a later time. The pumpkin walk has been a Cache Valley tradition since 1983. I’m excited to participate by designing and carving pumpkins that will be used along the walk ways. I am going to make a sign to put by our pumpkins that acknowledges each of our preschool children. I was planning on just using first names but if anyone is uncomfortable about that please let me know and I will leave your child’s name off the sign.

Homework Challenge: Now that we are starting to put on jackets, and shoes and socks I have found it is a lot harder to get my own kids out the door because of the time it takes to put everything on. Does your child know how to put their own coat on? Can they put their own shoes on? My three year old and I are working on it and if I take a little more time to start heading out the door I am so much more patient with her. If we are in a hurry then I just do it for her so I challenge you to take a little more time and use the time to teach how to put their jacket on, and how to put shoes on. Lacing will be a project for another day (or year =) )

We have one mom who has volunteered to drive to the pumpkin walk for Monday but we will need one more mom or dad to help drive for the Monday group. Both Monday’s groups will be going together to the pumpkin walk. I do need just one parent who can take at least two kids in there car on Thursday 20^th. Plan on bringing your child’s car seat or booster the day of the field trip so we can be safe in the car. I also want everyone to wear their preschool t-shirts so we can be easily identified.

Homework Challenge: We are talking about food this week. Meal time can be a very challenging time with young children. One thing that helps in our family is to expose the children to many different foods and not to cater to what we know they will eat. It's ok to give them very small portions. Praise them for trying it and being brave to do new things. Talking about why we eat fruits and vegetables hopefully will help the whole family eat healthier. When I was younger I loved when my aunt would encourage me to eat by building a house in my tummy. We had to eat the brown food for the walls of the house, the red for the flowers, the green for the grass etc. This can be a fun game to encourage eating food.

· I sent home calendars in your child’s backpack. We have a field trip coming up to the pumpkin walk so be sure to check that out. I will be needing one parent volunteer per class who can come and help drive and be with us at the pumpkin walk. Please let me know if this is something you can help with.

· This week is Show and Tell! Have your preschooler find something to bring that has his favorite color on it

· We are making drums this week with the oatmeal containers that we have been collecting. I have 11 right now and need just 3 more. Not only oatmeal containers work but I had some vital wheat gluten that was a little smaller that will work, I had a mom bring an empty container of Dishwashing soap packets. That will be great.

· Don’t forget your t-shirts on Monday or Tuesday. We are creating our own preschool shirts this week. Any color will work but lighter colors will work the best. I’m just doing white for my t-shirt and my girls. But Yellow, Blue, Red, Green would look really nice. If you have problems securing a shirt please let me know and we will work something out.

Homework Challenge: Sorting can be lots of fun for a preschooler and great practice for math skills. During play and work challenge your preschooler to sort things in different category. We are focusing on colors this week so you could have them sort their socks, toys, or food by colors. You could have them help you set the table or empty the dishwasher and practice sorting the silverware into piles of spoons, forks and knifes.

Homework Challenge: Now that it’s getting darker earlier it’s a great time to take the kids outside before bed and do some star gazing. Teach them how to find the big dipper and the north star. You can do some star counting as well. See how high they can count.

Calendar Announcements- Next week we will have our first Field Trip. We will be walking to a grass field a block away and having Preschool Olympics on Sept 21st and Sept 22nd. If you would like to come and help you would be more then welcomed. Please have your children wear good shoes they can run in, sunscreen, and perhaps a hat. Here is the times we will be at the park. The park address is 150 W 400 N.

In October we will be making Preschool T-shirts. Start looking for a blank T-shirt that will fit your child for this project. It can be any color. You might look at a second hand store. We will be decorating them Oct 3rd and 4th.

Homework Challenge: Animals are an important part of our world. Read some books about animals and give your child an opportunity to play with an animal this week. Some children who never get exposed to dogs, cats or other pets are very fearful of them. The more they have positive experiences with animals the less fearful they become. You may want to go to the willow park zoo or even a pet store to get some exposure. Another way is to ask a neighbor with a pet if you can visit and play with their pet. Just be sure you are careful and supervise the experience.

Retraction on Time Change and This Weeks Schedule

We are going back to the original times because not everyone could make it on time. I'm sorry for the confusion. But to make it work I will need everyone to pick up their child on time each day so my daughter can make it to kindergarten on time. I think this will work just fine. I just got done with Kindergarten Orientation for my daughter who goes to Thomas Edison Charter School and the time is different then I had planned on. In order for me to get her to school on time (12:20 pm) I'm going to have to move the Monday and Wednesday Classes up just 15 minutes. Classes will begin next week on Monday 29th or Tuesday 30th. If you have a question about times please e-mail or call me. Be sure to send a back pack each day with your child with a change of clothes in it, just in case of an accident.

Beautiful Junk: If you have any of the following could you send them with your child for some of the projects we will be making. Cardboard Oatmeal Containers (empty), Empty prescription, vitamin, or medicine bottles with child proof lids. (smaller the better), and toilet paper rolls.

I can't believe it's the end of the school year already. I have had so much fun with your kids. We had a great time at Willow Park today. Some of the highlights was seeing the slider turtles swim in the creek and then come out on the rock, the peacock with all it's feathers out, the huge fish swimming by all the ducks and geese, the baby yellow geese with mom and dad, the wallaby jumping, and the ultimate highlight was seeing the geese defend it's egg. They were jumping up on the "deer" (I can't remember the name of this animal) and making the funniest noise trying to scare off the deer. I think the deer was trying to have fun with them and wasn't really interested in the egg.

We will see you on Monday. You can come anytime after 10:45 am. We will start the program at 11:00 am.

This week we are going to Willow Park. You are invited to come along with us if you want. Please let me know if you are planning on going.

Home Projects/Challenge: Start thinking of summer now. Kindergarten will begin before you know it. To help prepare you child, schedule your day so you can fit in some Reading Time, and some type of project, whether it's, coloring, playing an alphabet or counting game, or making something together in the kitchen. Have them practice writing their name for you everyday. There are lots of storytimes in the valley you may want to check out. Willow Park Zoo does one, American West Heritage Center and most public libraries will. Other things to think about is to keep them active by going to the park and playing outside.

Next week is Preschool Graduation! Please plan on coming to see your child sing and perform for you at 11:00 am. We will also have treats to share to celebrate your preschooler's success in school. The whole family is invited to attend.

Home Project: Count everything this week. How many plates are on the table? How many forks are in our drawer? How many carrots do you want for lunch? Home Challenge: Rediscover things your child can do. Let them know you notice how well they can put their own clothes on, or make their bed, or help set the table. Be specific in your praise. What ever it is try this week to tell them how much you appreciate the things they can do. This helps them know they are important and loved.

If you are not continuing preschool I would challenge you to find time everyday that you sit with your child and create something, practice letters and numbers. This will help them continue to get ready for Kindergarten. I have been so proud of every single one!

Home Challenge: Have you tried having your child read some simple books to you yet? Let them sound the words out and I think you will be surprised how well they can read. I recommend the “Red Books” at the Hyrum Library. Home Project/Challenge: Bundle up and go outside sometime this week. In the winter it’s hard to get outside and play find an excuse to do something fun outside this week like: Make a snowman, make snow angels, Color snow with water bottles/spray bottles filled with colored water, Just jump around and stomp making footprints in the snow. You can make letters or pictures with your footprints.

Home Project: I would like to work on phone numbers with the students this week. Could you please send me what phone number you would like your child to know to best get a hold of you. This is important information to know especially before Kindergarten. This will also emphasis number recognition as well. Practice dialing your phone number on a “fake” phone at home. If they are having a hard time remembering the number I recommend putting it to music. It fits well with the “Bingo” song. “My phone number is seven long and I can dial home, 512-6094, 512-6094, 512-6094 and I can dial home.” Or you can say and I can dial mommy or daddy.
Calendar Items: This week is show and tell. I would like them to all bring something that starts with the letter D.
Just for your reference there are two holidays that fall on Monday and to make it fair for the M-W class I will not be teaching Thursday of that same week. Refer to Calendar for specific dates. Please let me know if you have any questions. I have tried teaching when my other kids are home from school and it was a bit of a disaster so I'd like to take those days off. Our school gets out May 25th so our last days will be May 23rd and May 24th.

Home Project: I went to a Child Development class this last week and had a great time learning about children and how they learn. One thing they stressed a lot is how important play is in how children learn. We may think they are just “playing” but for a child this is their work. We need to give children the opportunities in their day for uninterrupted play. But in the same token we should be a playmate. It’s hard to give them our time everyday for play but I want to challenge you to find a few minutes everyday to join with them in their play. Don’t take over the play let the child direct you. Give them the floor and let them tell you how to play.

Home Challenge/Assignment: This week we are studying weather and all the different seasons. Make a Weather Notebook: Each day take time to observe the weather with your child. Ask your child to describe what he or she sees and feels. Help record observations in a little notebook. If you have a thermometer you can record the temperature outside. You can have your child draw a picture. At the end of the week count how many days were sunny, warm, rainy, cloudy, cold, and snowy. You may also want to watch the local weather report on television or read the newspaper forecast with your child.

Home Challenge: Have your child practice calling someone on the phone. You can do a pretend phone call or a real call to a friend or family. Children need opportunities to participate in conversations. They learn to take turns as they listen and respond. We will practice this at school as well. This is an important skill as they get ready to go to Kindergarten. While you are practicing on the phone, see if they can find the numbers on the phone you tell them. This would be a good practice for numbers as well. If they can do this easily they may be ready to memorize their phone number.

Reading and Letter Practice: Just a reminder of the letters we have learned: R, T, E, A, I, D, M, S

See if your child can easily identify each of these letter names and sound. If not then you may want to work at home on the ones that are harder for them. You may want to make flash cards with these letters and then as we add more letters you can add more. This week we are introducing the sound th. This can be a hard sound to pronounce so make sure they are saying it with their tongue sticking out. You can have them practice in front of the mirror.

Calendaring: We will not be having preschool on Thanksgiving Day. And Christmas Break will be
